Australian royalty, the Bardas lineage, lists Portsea mansion

The Portsea mansion has been put on the market by the Bardas family, founders of popular Australian fashion brands Sportscraft, Sportsgirl and David Lawrence.
The wealthy Bardas family behind some of Australia’s most famous fashion brands have listed a $19m-$19.75m Mornington Peninsula mansion.
Named Cambo, the five-bedroom Portsea pad offers sweeping views of the bay and Melbourne CBD, an elevator, cellar, bar, colorful resin benches and manicured gardens.
RT Edgar’s Ilze Moran declined to comment on the owners, but public records show the home is owned by a company, which is also directed by one of David and Sandra Bardas’ grown children.

Mr Bardas died in 2023 while his wife, the daughter of billionaire businessman Victor Smorgon, died in 2007.
Mr Bardas’ grandfather, Russian immigrant Wolf Bardas, founded a Melbourne tailoring business in 1914.
It later grew into an empire that included the Sportscraft, Sportsgirl and David Lawrence fashion chains.
In the 1990s, Mr Bardas was worth an estimated $90m.
However, the Bardas family no longer owns any fashion brands, all of which have been sold to other companies.
Ms Moran said the Portsea estate was built about two decades ago.

The outdoor area has a fire pit for entertaining in good weather.
“It’s a creative home with beautiful pieces of art that reflect the taste of the owners, embracing the beauty inside and out of the house,” she said.
Seagull pictures, model ships and paintings are displayed throughout the house but will not be sold along with the accommodation.
Ms. Moran said the house was designed to accommodate many people with three different living areas.
“There’s a little area in the yard outside that’s nice, it’s got a crazy tractor in it and it’s almost like a meditation area where the kids can go right out of their playroom,” he added.
“The area is completely secure and completely fenced.”
Curved windows contrast with the walls in one of the living rooms.
Works of art add a pop of color to a living space.
Ms Moran is also managing the sales campaign for a house at 11 Paringa Rd, Portsea, which is listed with an expected price of $9.5m-$10m.
The owners commissioned renowned architect Stephen Akehurst to design the home.
Just 300m from the beach, it has 360 degree views from the back balcony taking in the Otways and Cape Schanck.
Features such as a pool, lift, living and dining area with open fireplace and formal lounge, three bathrooms and two powder rooms have attracted interest from buyers including Peninsula locals, Melburnians and expats returning to Australia.
The ground floor living area with kitchen opens to a sheltered deck and partially enclosed outdoor room.
Ms Moran said the house did not reflect Akehurst’s typical Hamptons style but showed his signature touches such as wide doorways and well-appointed rooms.
The pool at 11 Paringa Rd, Portsea, looks like a scene from a resort.
The place, surrounded by greenery, offers privacy and peace.
And another impressive beach property has been put on the market by the family of Australian tech entrepreneur, George Kepper.
The 72.84ha property near Metung has a five-room house, manager’s hall, machinery shed, workshop and cattle yards.
Known as Karra Downs, it is for sale in the $7m-$7.7m range.
The address offers 1.8km of frontage to Bancroft Bay and Boxes Creek accessible by private jet.
This 72.84ha property at 160 Nungurner Jetty Rd, Nungurner, is also for sale.
The listing at 160 Nungurner Jetty Rd, Nungurner, has been in the Kepper family since 1985.
Mr Kepper sold his communications services company Datacraft for $300m in 1997.
He later expanded into areas such as investment, property, and airline management and charging.
Appropriately enough, Karra Downs occupies a site designated to serve as a dormitory for Royal Australian Air Force radio operators during World War II.

Christie’s International’s Sean Cussell described Karra Downs as a turnkey trophy property with a rich and important history.
A parcel of land sits within five acres.
Expressions of interest for Karra Downs close at 3pm on February 6, while expressions of interest at Cambo and 11 Paringa Rd close at 12pm on February 3.
