An east Melbourne house with a Narnia-themed secret room hidden behind a cupboard is bringing the magic to the market.

A home at 13 Strathbogie Court, Kilsyth, is for sale in the $1.1m-$1.2m range.

Jellis Craig Mooroolbark and Patrick Donker of Lilydale said the owners of the property even commissioned local artist Michelle Urkhart to paint a painting based on the classic book, Chronicles of Narnia by author CS Lewis, in the hidden room.

In 1950, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first book in the series to be published.

The novel has been translated into more than 40 languages and was listed on Time Magazine’s 100 Best Books for Adults of All Time five years ago, among other accolades.

In the books, minor characters famously enter the fantasy world of Narnia through a wardrobe.

The Narnia-themed reading room was inspired by the owners’ children, now adults, who love the books of CS Lewis.

In 2005, the film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe starring Tilda Swinton and Liam Neeson as the voice of the lion character, named Aslan, grossed $745m worldwide.

Mr Donker said that when the owners of the Kilsyth house were built in 1996, they included a private study room for their grown-up children who loved the Narnia stories.

“And you actually have to go through the cupboard to get into it – as a child, it would be absolute gold,” Mr Donker said.

Liam Neeson voiced the lion character Aslan in the films Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 2008’s Prince Caspian and 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

One of the home’s five bedrooms has a colorful pantry hidden behind a set of small double doors.

“The built-in wardrobe has four sliding doors in it, you open one sliding door and you open two doors into the Narnia room,” said Mr Donker.

Some potential buyers with multiple children have noted that their offspring may end up fighting over who gets the bedroom with the Narnia nook.

Mr Donker said the shelter could serve as a youth study or play area or as a storage area.

Outside the house, there is a small fairy garden set up under a Japanese maple tree that was planted about twenty years ago.

Mr Donker said many families had checked out the 864sq m plot which showed a sunken lounge with a gallery-like area above.

The kitchen is equipped with a Westinghouse pyrolytic oven, cooktop and dishwasher, stone benches, pantry and a number of electrical points.

“The owners renovated the kitchen a few years ago, but other than that, it’s natural – the home is really well built,” Mr Donker said.

“They built a bit back from the street to allow for off-street parking.”
