Artist Grahame Marshall is selling a unique studio home in Port Adelaide

This inspiring Port Adelaide home has a former stable and is ready to serve as a museum for another buyer.
Architect Grahame Marshall and wife Bianca Wheeler bought the property at 94 St Vincent St in 2019, attracted by the unique offering it had to offer – a historic building to the front, and a brand new modern house to the rear combined with an inner courtyard.
It proved the perfect location for Grahame to set up a studio and gallery in the old building, and make themselves at home in the new three-level townhouse at the back.
“We went in, looked at it and fell in love instantly, we bought it right there,” said Mr Marshall.

“We call the front one Bond Studio and the back one we call Bond House.”
“The Bond House looks exactly as we bought it – it was brand new, architecturally designed, and completely different, but we made a few minor changes to it.
“The previous one was a three-bedroom, 100-year-old house that was completely rebuilt, so some of the changes were done by all of us.

“We bought it as a three-bedroom house, but we wanted a house that we could use as an artist studio and also work as a home office, which is why we converted the previous house into this.”

Mr Marshall said he used the front bedroom of the historic St Vincent St-facing house as a gallery, while the other two bedrooms were converted into his painting studio.
“I have always described living here as something deep,” he said.
“In terms of living in these two buildings, which we consider to be one, I like the juxtaposition between the historic character and history of the Bond studios in the front, and then the unique architectural and modern feel of the Bond house in the back.
“We have so many different places to live in, so it feels like you’re living in a dozen different houses every day.

“For me, different things inspire creativity, it doesn’t have to be the place where I work, but it helps to have a space that is easily accessible, as is the case in both houses.
“So if I get a big inspiration, I can go straight to the yard and try to catch it.
“It’s a creative and relaxing place to just relax, whether you’re painting, creating or working.
Mr Marshall said it was not the first piece of art in the area – it was designed by photographer AE Bond – and he felt proud that it had been able to continue its creative history.
“He built it as his residence and places for photography,” he said.

“When the house was being renovated and before we bought it, under the floorboards they found 1,500 glass negatives from his studio which they donated to the Maritime Museum here in Port Adelaide, so we decided to keep calling this house the Bond Studio and the Bond House in the back as a tip of the hat to him.”
