‘The pool is ridiculous’: An exclusive island home with the title of an iconic Australian landmark

One of only two houses on Hayman Island to be voted a landmark property listing on realestate.com.au this month.

Beach dreams fuel Aussie hearts — those lush views, sounds of waves, breezes and cool dips make beach pads the ultimate home and status symbol.

So when we asked viewers to choose an iconic beach home in realestate.com.au’s latest social media ‘iconic listing’ poll, we knew the bar would be set very high.

The winner was the Whitsundays knock-off – an eight-bathroom, six-bedroom contemporary masterpiece that is one of only two homes on Hayman Island.

With an asking price of around $25m, 1 Raintree Avenue, Whitsundays is a stunning combination of concrete, glass and timber. It features calm minimalist interiors, a basalt infinity pool and expansive glass walls that enjoy views over the Coral Sea and nearby islands from almost every room.

Designed by world-renowned architect Kerry Hill, the simple and spacious three-level home offers each bedroom an ensuite and balcony, as well as an owner’s study, dressing room and stunning views. The main living area flows onto a breezy alfresco area, while there are private sitting areas below.

The home is built within the InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, which offers permanent vacation benefits such as 24/7 concierge, private chefs and wellness pampering.

There are also Hayman’s pristine beaches and access to the Great Barrier Reef to enjoy, but with little more than a resort, there isn’t much in the way of shops, cafes, activities or neighbors. And you need a boat or helicopter arranged by the resort to reach the land.

But agent Nic Whitehead at WhiteFox Gold Coast says the island’s isolation isn’t a factor turning off high-net-worth individuals who want to retreat privately – it’s an asset.

“They want something special and private.”

He said the land has received a lot of interest from overseas during the five months it has been on the market.

“It comfortably accommodates many guests and is therefore ideal for entertaining or events, with private catering available at the resort.

“The pool is ridiculous, with such amazing views over the ocean. It’s like living on your own private island.”

The runners-up boasted equally impressive coastlines.

Perched above the cliffs at the top of the Ben Buckler headland in North Bondi, 156 Brighton Boulevard’s new three-level dazzler offers six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a ground floor lawn, pool and Bondi-to-horizon views from almost every room – at an undisclosed price.

This property at 4 Childe Street is five minutes from the heart of Byron Bay but feels far away.

Surrounded by pristine Belongil Creek, Belongil Beach and untouched forest, this 1,776sqm sanctuary is immersed in nature.

For $30m, a buyer gets one two-bedroom apartment and a one-bedroom studio with plenty of entertainment space to take from those features – and there’s a built-in skating ramp.

For a more secluded coastal retreat, the three-bedroom Avalon Coastal Retreat at 11922 Tasman Highway takes pride of place in the Rocky Hills of southeast Tasmania.

Listed at more than $4.8m, this modern beachfront property eschews polished concrete floors and glass walls for uninterrupted views across the Freycinet Peninsula – and has private access to De Gillern Beach below. What more could you want from a beach home?

This month viewers voted for Australia’s most luxurious homes, with the winner announced in late March.
