Brighton: Penthouse with private pool, six-car garage for sale

Melbourne architect Nick McKimm is selling his Brighton studio.

Renowned Melbourne architect Nick McKimm is selling his impressive Brighton mansion for $9.1m-$9.9m.

Thirty-five years ago, Mr. McKimm started a construction business that has grown into a firm of builders, interior designers and architects specializing in high-end residential projects and retail developments.

In 2024, Mckimm’s ‘Moda’ complex in Brighton was shortlisted in the Australian Interior Design Awards’ category.

And three years ago, ‘Sussex House’, also in Brighton, was shortlisted for the same awards.

Mr McKimm’s two-storey house, called the Skyhome, sits on top of a McKimm-built shophouse with a construction cost of around fifteen million.

RT Edgar and Rina Ma’s Will Maxted has a listing with CBD views, as well as a private pool and spa, gym, lift and six-car underground garage.

Mr McKimm said he was inspired by Byron Bay, as well as the islands of Greece and Spain, when designing the home which features soft curves, travertine stone and Venetian plaster walls.

His treasured memories include entertaining family and friends on the deck.

Curved walls are among the design features.

Mr McKimm moved to the property in 2023 but is selling because his grown children are now at university, and he also wants to start his next project.

He said the large living space is now too big for him and his daughter if he stays, and his sons who study interstate.

The views from the kitchen and living room are among his favorite features.

“As for the master bedroom, because it’s on the top floor, it has a view of the city and a view of the city,” Mr McKimm said.

“Nice big room with a big balcony.”

The penthouse is part of a boutique complex with architecture, interior design and finishes by Mckimm, based in Brighton and the Gold Coast.

The stone throughout the house had been bought overseas, while the floor lamp was made in Ukraine and sent to Australia.

May be available for purchase if a Skyhome buyer is interested.

“There is matching lighting in the dining room and paint in the bathroom which were both custom made by Byron Bay,” added Mr McKimm.

Elsewhere there is a landscape design by John Patrick Landscape Architects, a powder room, white steel feature doors, natural wood shelving in the kitchen and outdoor concrete planter boxes.

Mr Maxted described Skyhome as “sensible, practical, and well thought out”.

“It’s rare to see a property like this in Brighton, a home that is a personal statement and a unique building,” said Mr Maxted.

“We expect strong interest from domestic and international buyers who appreciate not only the prestige of the address but also the real world-class design that defines Mckimm’s Skyhome.”

Expressions of interest close at 5pm on April 21.
