The basic structure of software development plan, design, build, test, deliver, maintain you stay healthy. What the AI has done is break down the time taken by each stage, usually by an order of magnitude. The requirements for when the days of the workshops are needed can be gathered from the minutes of the interviews with the stakeholders and the existing documents. Architecture proposals that require weeks of senior engineers’ time can be produced, tested, and iterated in an afternoon. Code that took a sprint can be installed in hours.
The bottle is gone. It doesn’t write code anymore. Corner testing, governance, and securely deploying code that AI generates. If your review processes, security controls, and shipping pipelines were designed for human-powered production, they will be broken under AI-powered output. The volume is simply too high.

AI-generated code is inherently insecure. But it’s produced without context about your specific system, your compliance obligations, or the extreme conditions your application will face in production. If left unchecked, it introduces predictable failure modes: hard-coded credentials, weak access controls, injection vulnerabilities, and logic that passes static analysis but fails under real-world load.
The answer is not to slow the adoption of AI. It is to be building dominance in the tool chain itself, not in policy documents that developers ignore on deadline, but in agents, repositories, and checkpoints that cannot be skipped.
Effective management of AI in the SDLC works on four levels:
- Tool level controls – Security stripes embedded directly into the AI toolkit, block insecure patterns and hard-coded secrets at the source before the code reaches the endpoint.
- Impassable human gates – Mandatory checkpoints to verify high-risk code methods, payments, PHI enforced by policy, not by trust.
- Full audit trail – All AI-assisted commits are marked in the version history with the tool’s metadata, giving security teams the ability to inspect the complete list of any line of code.
- Continuous compliance monitoring – OWASP Top 10, HIPAA, SOC 2, and PCI-DSS certifications apply in the review pipeline, not after deployment.
What ‘Inside Man’ Really Means
The phrase “human in the loop” has become a cliché in the marketing of AI products. It’s worth being precise about what it means in practice.
It doesn’t mean that a human is looking at every line that the AI writes. That would negate the speed advantage entirely. It means that people retain authority over every material risk decision: technical specifications before construction begins, structures before they are locked, differences flagged for protection before they are assembled, releases before they reach production.
AI suggests. The person agrees. The loop never breaks.
