Former LA Deputy Sentenced to 5 Years in ‘Crypto Godfather’ Fraud Case

A former LA County Sheriff’s Deputy was recently sentenced to 63 months in prison for running a violent robbery check.
The project was led by a man known as the “Crypto Godfather.” And there was nothing complicated about it. There is no exploitation. No smart contract hacks. Just corrupt cops and physical threats in crypto clothing.

How to Shake Down
The system required no code. It needed a badge.
Michael David Coberg, 44, was an active duty LASD deputy and helicopter pilot. He used that position as a pawn for Adam Iza, a crypto entrepreneur who called himself the Crypto Godfather. Iza paid Coberg to intimidate business rivals instead of taking them to court.
Two incidents defined this case.
In 2021, Coberg and his armed associates confronted the victim over a financial dispute. His legal presence confirmed the threat while Iza pressured the victim to hand over $127,000. The deceased’s passport was taken on the spot.
In one plot, the victim was lured from Miami to LA under false pretenses, ordered to obtain drugs, then pulled over in a traffic stop and arrested to destroy his credibility in a business dispute.
Coberg was ordered to pay $127,000 in restitution. Prosecutors summed it up simply. He betrayed his oath through greed.

The extensive course here is another crypto space that is rarely talked about. Digital security means nothing if people know you have an economy. The threat doesn’t stay on the blockchain. It’s moving to the real world.
The Crypto Godfather title was part of the problem. A bright scene in this field attracts predators. This time, the predators had badges.
Keep your personal information private. If you have a dispute about crypto assets, use legal counsel. The line between defense coordinator and co-conspirator in this case did not exist.
Broad Reduction of Enablers
Coberg’s conviction is not final. It’s part of a pattern.
Prosecutors are no longer chasing hackers and exploiting developers. They are tearing down the infrastructure of people behind crypto crimes. The people who provide the cover, enforce the deals, and move the money are all in different places now.
It’s happening all over the world. The US Treasury Department is sanctioning the facilitators of North Korean IT workers. India arrests key figures in GainBitcoin Ponzi scheme. The DOJ is going after domestic workers who thought their status made them untouchable.
It didn’t.
Adam Iza, the Crypto Godfather himself, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion. He is awaiting sentencing now. Coberg’s 63 months set a tough benchmark for what followed.
The virtual layer of crypto crime is under siege. And the message from all places is the same. No amount of status or legality protects you.
