“The expectation is that we’re going to be open-minded and have a conversation and I’m going to give reasonable input from, you know, the point of view of someone that you like and want to see succeed. So even if we don’t agree, it’s — I think it’s always very productive.”

In January, Usha and her husband announced that they are expecting their fourth child together—a milestone that will see them become the first vice presidential family in modern history to welcome a baby while in office.

Speaking to an NBC News reporter Kate SnowUsha noted that she would feel “complete” with the couple’s three children, but said that she and her husband believe that if there is a chance to have another child, they should take advantage of that opportunity.

“People have asked me if we will have a fourth child, I have never closed the door on that,” she said. “I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two children, and I thought – I felt complete, right? So I really wanted to have a third child.

“We felt very complete with the third child, in many ways. We had our daughter, who was amazing, and she was very beautiful. And so I wasn’t sure. But as time went on, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about what was possible.

“And if there’s an opportunity, I have to take it,” he continued. “I knew I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew I’d be happy if we had four. So here we are.”

The couple’s new baby, who will be born in July, will be the youngest of the couple’s sons, Ewan,8, and Vivek6, and their daughter, Mirabel4.

“There are some differences, obviously. I have to dress up a lot. I enjoyed my last pregnancy, there were a lot of sweatpants. I worked from home, sometimes I wore a blazer over what was underneath,” she joked.

“So there’s a little difference. And our transportation is different. I have to ride in the back seat now, so I’m always sick.”

Speaking about the role of her husband in the President Donald TrumpAdministration has affected family life at home, Usha noted that the couple has taken steps to try to maintain a normal situation as much as possible, even after moving to the vice president’s residence in early January.

The vice president’s official residence is just inside the Observatory Circle, in a grassy and highly private area, and is guarded by armed guards and a member of the Secret Service at all hours of the day.

However, Usha said this didn’t stop her from finding a place to live in the area, she said she continued her trips to Costco, the entertainment she joked was always “fun”.

“We have neighborhood stores. We have a Costco membership,” she said. “We have all the things we like that we can find. [The kids] choose their food box items from there. It’s just kind of a family tradition.

“It’s the kind of thing you don’t want to give up when you have a family life and you’re moving to something like the Naval Observatory.”

The move to Number One Observatory Circle marked a milestone in the family’s life—Usha and her husband chose to put their family home in Alexandria, VA, on the market in Feb. 27, 2025—about a month to the day after moving into legal residency.

Just five days later, the home’s status was changed to “pending sale”; and within three weeks, that deal had closed, as the final price was revealed as $1,867,025—$172,025 over Vance’s $1.69 million list price, as first reported by Forbes.

Turning her attention to her husband’s political ambitions, Usha declined to confirm whether Vance has plans to run for president in 2028, when Trump leaves the White House, but noted that her main focus right now is the upcoming midterm elections.

“JD is very focused on the midterm elections, of all the things going on right now, which are obviously very important,” he said.

“I don’t think I have to go and do anything. I didn’t think I had to do that. [in 2014]actually. Sometimes I have thoughts that fit freely in one direction or the other. Sometimes I have very strange visions. And the world I think actually accepts that, because everybody knows that I really care about JD’s success. “
