Victorian historical military bases will be a top seller

The 128ha former Ministry of Defense site at 2 Cordite Ave, Maribyrnong, has been in the process of being demolished for years.

Victoria will be the home of the Albanian government’s multibillion-dollar security force, with 16 properties around the country set to be stolen.

Nationally, 64 buildings will be sold in full, while three others have been marked for partial sale, and the money will be reinvested in supporting the National Defense Strategy.

On this list is the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force at Point Cook, where the squadron was established in 1914.

It is set to be fully sold, while the nearby RAAF Williams-Laverton site will be partially subdivided.

Part of their former land in the area has been transformed into a new town-sized housing and employment area now called Williams Landing.

They are also required to vacate high-rises in Melbourne including Victoria Barracks in Parkville, and training depots in Sandringham and St Kilda.

The Geelong region will also have a major sale, with the sale of Fort Queenscliff and home of Geelong’s Air Force Cadet Unit, as well as the partial sale of Swan Island, the end of the lease of the Barwon Training Ship.

The planned sale follows the release of the Defense Estate Audit, which found that the nation’s armed forces are “burdened by the weight of their past when it comes to asset management”.

“Today’s architecture landscape encompasses many legacy areas without a clear ongoing link to current or future capabilities,” the study said.

“Urgent intervention is needed to correct the unstable trajectory caused by decades of deferred decisions on disputed inheritance matters.”

RAAF Base Williams at Point Cook was the first home of the Australian Air Force in 1921.

In a press release on the website of the Ministry of Defense today, it was noted that some of the sites are of historical importance and the Albanian government will maintain and improve public access to them.

“The Albanian Government is committed to ensuring that the Australian Defense Force has the resources and capability it needs to keep Australians safe,” the press release said.

“This means making difficult decisions to move toward a modern Defense environment that reflects the needs of our nation and our Defense personnel.”

The former Maribyrnong estate is listed, but was already in the process of being subdivided and put on the market in 2018 – with previous proposals it could eventually hold up to 6000 new homes.

In 2017 the Chinese developer had proposed a $2.5bn plan for the site.
