He rose to fame as an action hero who saved the world with a Swiss Army knife and a tape on the hit 80s TV show MacGyver.

These days, Richard Dean Anderson lives in a Malibu estate with a $30 million ($A45 million) retirement.

Reports indicate that the actor settled on a residence to design and build his own Mid-west style home, which was previously featured in Architectural Digest.

“Rick lives outside of Malibu by the beach,” a source told Closer Weekly.

“He has a big house and his dream house there some years ago.”

Anderson bought the original four-bedroom home in 1987 for $US1.06 million ($A1.5 million) before it was demolished.

She has reportedly been dividing her time between three households since retiring from the small screen more than a decade ago.

According to the source, Anderson spent the first few years of his retirement focusing on raising his daughter, Wylie, who was 15 at the time. He shares Wylie with his ex Apryl A. Prose.

“Now she’s grown up and in the business herself and Rick is very supportive of everything she does,” the insider revealed.

“He is a producer and a director so working together is something they have talked about, if he ever wants him to do something it will be yes, he is a great father and would do anything for him, he is very proud!”
