Oscar-Nominated Couple Offers Wildly Creative Encino Estate for $16 Million

Terence and Rachel Winter not your next door neighbors. They are award-winning writers, directors, and producers, known for interesting and entertaining audiences around the world.

And, in their spare time, they have taken to creating a delightfully eclectic home. Their eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom Encino home, called Eden, was recently listed for $15,995,000.

Rachel is an acclaimed producer and director, nominated for an Oscar for producing “Dallas Buyers Club” also won a Webby for the production of “Supreme: The Battle for Roe.” Terence was nominated for writing “The Wolf of Wall Street.” He also won an Emmy for his work on “The Sopranos” and created the Emmy-winning HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.” He is currently the executive producer of Taylor Sheridan “Tulsa King.”

With all that ingenuity in their hands, it’s no wonder they were able to build one interesting home, from the ground up. They bought 2.6 hectares of land in 2017 for 5,592,000 dollars, and started working.

“We couldn’t keep much of what was here because the foundation was too far away,” said Rachel. “We should have made you some peanut soup.”

Rachel spearheaded the interior design of the 10,815-square-foot home, assisted by an architect and friend. Linda Brettler. You owe Frank Lloyd Wright because of his inspiration, which is not surprising when you take the signature of the famous architect flourishes throughout.

“At Encino’s prestigious Royal Oaks, this unique property is where beauty, craftsmanship, and privacy meet in perfect harmony – a true testament to passion and dedication,” it said. Jade MillsBeverly Hills’ leading real estate professional and California’s No. 1 agent for Coldwell Banker Realty.

“Eden is not just a home, it’s a work of art, a combination of timeless style, unmatched craftsmanship and unparalleled vision,” said Mills, who is putting together the property. The one-of-a-kind front door is also an instant eye-catcher.

“Linda found an inspiring photo of an old barn door in Mexico. She gets full credit for it,” Rachel said. “I chose the color of the door section (aqua). I don’t think anyone got it at first, but they finally did.”

Rachel also designed custom staircases.

“I wanted a curved/bent wood, and I wanted a copper inlay, but I didn’t want it to fit. So it’s purposely a little over to the left.

“I think with eclecticism, it helps when the elements speak to each other in a subtle way, they echo something like asymmetry everywhere. It can stop the whole environment, make everything feel right or make sense.”

Other unique interior designs include a bright red dining room with custom-built cabinetry.

“I saw a picture from an old home in Georgia. I thought, what a great way to display the beautiful dishes from my first wedding,” Rachel said with a laugh.

The tile in the primary suite has another design feature that can’t be found anywhere else.

“I call it Pucci tile, and it’s from Spec Ceramics,” Rachel explained. “The tile guys had to lay them out in the room to make sure all the tiles were going the right way—meaning no two next to each other were facing the same direction to preserve the ‘no pattern’ pattern.” I asked. Leo at Spec Ceramics to show me something more than anyone else, and that’s what I chose.”

The primary suite also features a living room separated from the bedroom by a custom-made, Asian-inspired wooden screen; two wardrobes; and two bathrooms, one with rose quartz countertops and antique brass lighting, and the other with a large steam shower and bathtub.

Another large, floral bedroom has a chevron-patterned wood paneling and an en suite bathroom with a mod purple vanity.

The kitchen also stands out with its salmon-colored Poggenpohl cabinetry, leather quartzite countertops, and high-end appliances, including a large refrigerator and freezer, an eight-burner range, and three ovens. A hammered wrought iron hood and open center island complete the inviting room, which can be used for family gatherings or large entertaining.

Additional amenities include a safe room with a ballistic door, a state-of-the-art home theater with a custom wood ceiling, a gym with a sauna and steam shower, a game room, a 300-bottle wine cellar, a formal office, and advanced security and sound systems.

Outside, there are private hiking trails, a grove of mature fruit trees, an enclosed dog run, and a pool with spa. An outdoor kitchen, wet bar, fireplace, and shower are nearby.

There’s also a detached guesthouse that looks like it could fit in among the pink and green bungalows of the Beverly Hills Hotel. It features a stylish living area, a kitchen, and a balcony overlooking a 100-foot-long rock stream and water feature.

You might wonder how, after investing so much time, effort, and resources into Eden, the Winters could think of parting with it.

“My heart hurts when I think about leaving. I know I will never live in a house like this again,” said Rachel. “But we’re empty nesters a few years ahead of schedule, and we’re spending a lot of time on the East Coast to be closer to the kids in their schools. It feels like it might be the right time, but it’s very difficult all the same.”
