Dame Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand for six years, was seen looking at the material on the beaches north of Sydney, leading to speculation that she and her family may have jumped into the ditch.

Ardern and her television presenter husband Clarke Gayford have been spotted at several pubs in the Curl Curl and Freshwater beach areas and were also seen dining at a Mexican restaurant in Dee Why.

Ardern became the world’s youngest head of government in 2017 and won acclaim for her introduction of strict gun laws after the Christchurch mass shooting in 2019 and her response to the Covid pandemic when New Zealand contained the virus.

The former Labor leader stepped down as Prime Minister in 2023 and moved to the US for a few years before moving to the UK at the end of last year.

But the couple’s sightings this month on the northern beaches suggest they may be considering calling Australia home.

In December last year, Gayford told the media that he would be looking for a job but TV is a tough industry and New Zealand is a small industry. He recently produced a documentary about Jacinda, called Premier, and presented a program called Fish of the Day. He has often talked about his love for the sea.

Last weekend, Ardern visited Gerringong with the local paper reporting on her meeting with local leaders at the Gerringong Community Expo.

Word on the street suggests that the couple is looking for a nice family home in a beach area. They have one daughter, Neve, who is seven years old.

In Auckland back in 2018 the couple bought a 1920s four-bedroom home with large pictures and a deck.

Based on that house we’re putting together a selection of northern beach houses, in the $5m-$6m range, that might fit.

Number 22 Glen St, Freshwater is a new five bedroom home in a cul-de-sac a short walk to Freshwater village and the beach. It will be sold through Cunninghams Northern Beaches but no auction date has been given yet.

It is listed with Clarke & Humel and will go up for auction on March 7.

Then there’s 72 Hay St, Collaroy, a six-bedroom family home with pool and spa, renovated last year and just seconds from Collaroy Beach. McGrath has a listing and the property will be sold on March 14.
