Old school Darwin at home with a new Troppo touch goes under the hammer

A Darwin couple is saying goodbye to their beloved Fannie Bay property, putting a holiday-style home complete with Balinese bathroom and Troppo renovation under the hammer after two decades of ownership.
The couple bought the 1150 sqm property at 2 Macartney St, Fannie Bay, 23 years ago when their two daughters were in their teens.
“It survived Cyclone Tracy and was repaired after that, but when we bought it, it needed repair,” said the wife.
Her husband admitted that the home looked “down in the mouth” when they got the keys, but it came with a rich history.
“The chap down the road was a quantity surveyor, and his comment to me when we bought this house was that this house has a history,” he said.
“After the typhoon, the house was extended and renovated into an exhibition.
“When it sold, it fetched a price that people thought was incredible at the time.”

The couple said the house has good bones and great potential with plenty of space, a large block and a great location.
They engaged Troppo Architects to help bring the space back to life and create the perfect indoor-outdoor lifestyle for Darwin.
“They had really interesting ideas that we went with,” said the wife.
“They did something really cool in the water, so when it rains it’s like a waterfall.
“And I really like the Balinese bathroom.
“You can sleep there and feel like you are in the middle of Bali, surrounded by leaves and birds.
“It’s very beautiful and very peaceful.”
Spread over two levels, the home has five bedrooms, an open living plan and an easy indoor-outdoor flow.
On the ground floor, the home features a wrap-around porch, lounge areas, wood paneling, garden views and bright, light-filled living areas.
The main living area, kitchen and study all open to the balcony, while the double wardrobe opens to the family room.

The kitchen has dark cabinets, brushed benchtops, a five-burner gas stove and a servery with bi-folding windows to the breakfast bar on the porch.
The master bedroom is on this level and features a stunning Balinese style ensuite.
This bathroom is enclosed and has wood accents, lots of windows and a soaking tub.
There is also a second bedroom with built-in wardrobes, a bathroom conveniently located outside, and a laundry room on the veranda.
Upstairs, the hallway overlooks the space above the living area.
Two of the three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and one has access to the balcony.
There is also a separate bathroom and toilet.
Outside, the tropical theme continues with a resort-style pool and Bali hut, all surrounded by tropical gardens.
“People have said that our home is like a resort,” said the husband.
The couple said the home was ready to entertain and welcome visiting family and friends.
“We had a lot of good times here,” said the wife.
“We’ve had girls’ birthdays here and, by sitting outside, you can open up the home and have a big crowd.”

The home sits on a private block with remote gated access, yet is close to everything Fannie Bay has to offer.
“It’s a nice, friendly place,” said the wife.
“We have street parties a few times a year and it’s the kind of place where you know your neighbor and feel safe.
“And we’re close to Parap markets and sailing clubs – we’re right in the middle of it all.”
The couple is selling to be closer to family, but will miss their Fannie Bay vacation home.
“We will miss the air, swimming in the lake and being able to sit outside in one of the many places where we can enjoy the bird life, the trees and the moving leaves,” said the husband.
“And we will miss the laksas,” added his wife.
