Buterin Urges Ethereum to Build ‘Sanctuary Tech’ Against Digital Control

Vitalik Buterin frames “sanctuary tech” as digital islands that can withstand political and corporate pressure.

Vitalik Buterin proposed placing Ethereum as part of a larger “sanctuary technology” ecosystem.

He described these as free and open tools that allow people to live, work, communicate, and collaborate in ways that are resilient to external pressures.

Buterin’s opinion

The founder of Ethereum explained in a social media post that the goal is to create digital islands of stability, reduce power struggle issues, and armless interactions. This is due to the concerns brought to him in the last year about the growth of government control and surveillance, wars, the increase of corporate power, the decline of quality in all major technology platforms, social media becoming a memetic battlefield, and the rise of AI and how it interacts with these forces.

Buterin also shared that people feel that Ethereum has not beneficially improved the lives of people facing these pressures in areas that society cares about, such as freedom, privacy, digital security, and social inclusion.

In response, he suggested sanctuary technology as an effective solution to the situation. Instead of trying to dominate existing systems, these tools will allow individuals and institutions to operate in ways that are less vulnerable to outside pressure. In this vision, Ethereum will contribute by providing a shared digital space without an owner, where people can connect and create sustainable social and economic structures.

However, he clarified that this approach is not to return the world to a network model, and it will not force all money into blockchains or move all governance to separate entities.

Instead, Buterin described the goal as “devalued,” which means reducing the risk that any winner in a global power struggle will gain complete control over others while also reducing the chance that any loser will face total defeat.

Limitations of Ethereum

The post also addressed the idea that Ethereum should only focus on finance. As much as Buterin acknowledged that financial freedom is important, he said that it alone cannot solve broader problems such as power, surveillance, and social divisions.

He added that the chain cannot fix the world on its own, and that trying to do so would require a level of centralized power that conflicts with the principles of a decentralized society. Its strength lies in enabling sustainable digital architecture, which forms the basis of his vision for sanctuary technology.

The founder of Ethereum gave examples of what he sees as liberating technologies, including Starlink, which runs on the model space of large open-source languages, Signal, and Public Notes.

He concluded by asking for clarity and communication between the full range of technologies, from wallets and applications to operating systems and hardware, while focusing on users who really need sanctuary technology and collaboration with partners inside and outside the crypto sector.
